blog love from big blog island: on balance

Mahalos go out to Hawaii Island blog-meister Brent Norris for his kinds words about SusHI, and his assessment of SusHI’s balance (via greencollartech).
Says Norris, “we love this site. Lots of posts, good reading. Well intentioned with lots of supporting links.” Oooohhh! That feels good.
Then, take his comment that SusHI’s “a bit heavy on the climate change debate”. I know the feeling. Especially after drilling down into the climate modelers recent results for Hawaii, and ending another round of my sustainability seminar with a summation of wot we know.
That’s a lot of climate change coverage…at least recently.
Whether it’s about debate, or not…hard to say.
Still, on tabulation of my 1,072 posts by category, I notice that climate change is running 20%, while systems thinking is more like 22%. Hawaii-specific garners 24% of the posts, and 17% are about community initiatives. NB
That kind of balance feels good, too. Fairly close to my original intention to cover all 3 spheres: ecological, economic and community.
At the same time, I’m fairly sensitive to the way our different worst fears tend to drive the sustainability conversation. Everyone wants to know which sphere is gonna flip out first: climate change? peak oil? unrest or pandemic?
My best guess is…all three.
And, yes, I admit my weakest contribution to this conversation is in the community sphere. Never mind that SusHI’s most popular post of all time was the global warming equity bit. I need to focus more on social justice here. And I will.
More worse, now that I look back over my post profile, I notice I haven’t fully laid out the 3 spheres thang, except in my speech (and perhaps in this post on solar tech). Gotta get to that, too…
Lemme know how you see the merits of SusHI’s shifting focus, too.
We all have so much to learn. We urgently need to broaden and deepen our conversation about sustainability in these islands.
