cheaper by the dozen: a carbon diet for Hawaiians

carbon dieting

Who knew cutting 12 tons from our carbon diet could simultaneously save money?

That’s Sierra Club’s localized assessment, accounting for global warming’s differential impacts on Hawai`i.

We know we’re in for rising sea levels, more severe hurricanes, and hotter temperatures.

Yet, because our expenses and footprints are much greater than other states, Hawaiians can also save more by going green.

Here’s their ten ways to cut a total of 12 tons from your Hawaiian lifestyle:

  1. Replace 7 100-Watt bulbs with 15-Watt compact fluorescent bulbs.
  2. Bike commute (or telecommute) 3 days per week to work.
  3. Convert to from electric to solar hot water at home.
  4. Use a clothesline instead of a dryer.
  5. Install a photovoltaic system for home electricity.
  6. Skip a trip to the West Coast.
  7. Take the bus one-third of the time for your transportation needs.
  8. Recycle 2500 aluminum cans, 3000 bottles, or 500 pounds of paper.
  9. Go on a Sierra Club work trip and plant 40 trees.

OK, so that’s nine ways. The tenth way actually saves 2.5 tons.

You prolly guessed what it is. Right: Trade in your SUV for a fuel-efficient hybrid.

Oh, and, did I mention it’s cheaper? The Sierra Club site lists dollar savings for most of these items. The Kaua`i savings, by their calculation could be over $8,000.

Such a deal, no?
