unsustainability leave ya speechless? attend this confab

Gotta get up and get away…to Kauai Community College this Saturday morning (13Oct). Why? Yours truly will keynote the LEGS conference on Kauai sustainability.

You should come. Every Kauaian and others who care about our island’s future should be in this conversation called “Locally Engaging Global Solutions“.

Hey, Jeff Mikulina will be there, talking about how we can motivate changes in behavior toward a more sustainable island lifestyle.

Following the release of Hawaii’s 2050 sustainability “plan” 3 weeks ago, our island can use some careful scrutiny as we focus on the challenges of our unsustainability.

Guess wot? Kauai is not immune to peak oil, climate change and blessed unrest. DUH!

On the contrary, our island is infected with the unsustainability bug like almost nowhere else. Methinks the phrase “what it is is up to us” has far more meaning than we know.

juggling earthSo, we’ll take the time on Saturday to focus on the big picture…and the baby steps we’re now taking to prepare our island for the world to come. I’ll riff on HI2050′s goal of “sustainable living” and depict sustainability thinking as a form of juggling.

We know there’s a strong chance the oil barges will stop coming, and our vaunted shoreline properties will go underwater…and there’s a decent chance our residents will rise up against the iniquites of inequity. Yikes! So much to think about all at once!

At this Saturday gathering, we’ll also hear from Adam Asquith about our energy choices, and from Stacy Sproat-Beck about the sustainability ‘knowledge base” we’re bringing forward from ancient Hawaiian learning.

Come on down! We’ll be hearing from lots of thoughtful and caring Kauaians as the day unfolds.

The presentations start (with moi) about 9:30 in KCC‘s Performing Arts Center. Expect the last presentation of the day (by Sproat-Beck) around 3:30PM.

…And then we’ll see wot follow-on initiatives we can forge.
