Kauai sustainability conference shows LEGS

3 spheres mental map for sustainability thinking

Ya wouldn’t know it from reading our island news rag, yet the ‘bookend’ speeches by Stacy Sproat-Beck and moi actually came off as planned.

I actually did deliver the keynote on the 3 spheres of sustainability thinking and Stacy actually did deliver the closer on ahupua`a management at yesterday’s LEGS conference. Too bad if ya missed ‘em.

Still, Maika`i no (outstanding) to Ben Sullivan and the Apollo Kauai conference crew who made this such a memorable day!

Somehow, cub reporter Nathan Eagle couldn’t get there early enough or stay late enough for these ‘bookends’, yet fortunately he was able to cover most other presentations…since there was so much good stuff getting dished all day.

Oh, and, last evening, the conference videographer called to ask if I would do the speech again…since he was late arriving, and missed me, too.

Oh well. It seemed to be well-received.

For those who may be interested, here’s my speech.

I certainly had fun putting it together and doing the delivery. This could be my stump speech for a while. In it, I try to sum up what we’re learning about sustainability thinking…in a way that can help us think more clearly and strategically about Kauai’s sustainability challenges.

I tell what may become a new children’s story about the 3 spheres…

Read it and reap.

  1. Ben Sullivan Says:

    Ken,

Thank you for delivering such a positive and articulate message to start the day yesterday! What a great push your speech provided to get the day rolling in the right direction. I was pleased with the balance of perspectives offered throughout the day and believe that the presentation by Dr. Asquith on the urgency and severity of Peak Oil was made much more effective by being a follow-up to your own insightful and rousing words. I do hope to hear it again soon, and we’re all incredibly grateful to have you here to guide us.

And of course Stacey Sproat embodies the phrase ‘actions speak louder than words’. Time to get back to the garden, eh, Ken?

  2. Jenn Sifuentes Says:

    Aloha Ken,
Thank you for your message at LEGS. I was SO stoked to see that you posted a copy of it here; I was called out during your speech and now I can soak up every word! Your thoughtfulness is a rare gem.
    Blessings,
    Jenn
